A rug for the hallway

Your hallway is an introduction to your home: it is the first impression visitors have of your decor. A hallway rug or runner is under a lot of pressure and must continue to look good in both everyday use and on special occasions.

It may be challenging to find the right size rug. Home entrances often open up to corridors or larger halls of different shapes that may include wider recesses. With VM Carpet’s rugs and runners, you will have exactly the right size and shape rug to make the entrance to your home both beautiful and functional.

A rug with beautiful canvas edges is perfect for hard-wear hallways. Canvas edging provides the most hard-wearing edge and looks attractive. Carpet whipping, which involves overlocking the edge of the carpet with yarn, is standard in hallway runners, but the thin yarn tends to snap and can quickly make the rug edge look frizzy and worn.

Hallways look better with rugs and runners that are sufficiently wide. The rug should be at least the width of the front door. We recommend leaving some (5–10 cm) of the floor visible at the edges. This will give a more spacious appearance, while still being easy to clean. Usually one big rug works better than several smaller ones. In long corridors, however, you can break up the space with several rugs to make it look more like a room and less like a corridor. We recommend that a single runner should not exceed 450 cm in length. A corridor that is 8–10 metres long will look best with two rugs.

Firmer and smoother surfaces work the best for hallway rugs and runners. Sisal, paper yarn and other more smooth-surfaced woven rugs stand up well to hard wear. A hallway rug has to be stain-repellent and easy to clean. We treat most woven rugs with stain-repellent treatment, including the canvas edging. Read more about washing rugs.

There is a lot of traffic in the hallway and corridors. The rug or runner should have a high-quality backing that keeps it in place, works well with underfloor heating, doesn’t flake and makes the rug dimensionally stable. Read more about the EVAPOLYTEX® backing developed in Finland.
